Buying woven wall baskets wholesale: a retailer’s guide

Classic woven wall plate, 36 cm, hanging on a wall in a styled interior

Handwoven wall baskets are a strong category for home décor retailers. They have good margins, low breakage, light parcels and a look that suits several interior trends at once. Buying handmade products from overseas still differs from ordering factory goods, though. Here’s what to check before your first order.

Minimum order quantities

MOQs for handmade baskets vary widely, from a few dozen pieces to several hundred per design. For a first order, look for a supplier that lets you mix sizes and designs to reach the minimum. That lets you test several sizes and palettes without overstocking any one SKU. Our MOQ is 50 pieces across four size categories, each supplied as a mixed assortment of designs.

A sensible first order for a single shop often looks like this:

CategorySharePieces
Classic (33–40 cm)about half~25
Small (22–25 cm)about a quarter~12
Mini (11–12 cm)about a quarter~13

Always start with samples

Photos of natural fibres never tell the whole story. A sample pack of three to six designs lets you check colour, stitching tightness, weight and how the pieces look under your store lighting. Ask whether the sample cost is credited against your first order. With us, it is.

Work out landed cost, not unit price

The unit price is only part of what you pay. Your real cost per piece, the landed cost, includes:

  • Product price
  • Freight (air express, air freight or sea), which depends on volume more than weight for baskets
  • Import duty for HS heading 4602 in your country, minus any preference for the origin country
  • Import VAT or sales tax, customs brokerage and any inspection or treatment fees

The simplest way to compare suppliers is to ask for a DDP quote, delivered duty paid to your door. Nested packing matters too: a supplier that nests baskets by size can fit many more pieces per carton, which reduces freight per piece significantly.

What “good quality” means for coiled baskets

  • Tight, even coils with no gaps where light shows through
  • Secure stitching, with no loose or split palm strips on the front or back
  • A true round shape that sits flat against the wall without rocking
  • Crisp pattern edges where colours change
  • Clean finishing: no stray fibres, dust or musty smell

Expect small differences between pieces of the same design. That’s the nature of handwork, and customers who buy handmade usually appreciate it. Make sure your supplier explains this clearly so you can set expectations on your product pages.

Lead times and seasonality

Ready-stock orders can ship within days (5–10 working days with us). Production orders take longer (30–45 days), because each piece is made by hand. Demand peaks before spring refreshes and the Christmas gifting season, so place production orders for Q4 by late summer.

Questions to ask any supplier

  1. Can I mix sizes and designs to reach the MOQ?
  2. Is the sample cost credited against my first order?
  3. Can you quote DDP to my door?
  4. Which export documents do you provide, including phytosanitary or treatment certificates if needed?
  5. How are the products labelled for country of origin?
  6. How do you describe the designs’ cultural inspiration? (In the US, mislabelling goods as Native American-made is illegal.)
  7. Can you add my hang tags and barcodes?
